Rooibos is a fynbos species within the Cape Floral Kingdom, one of only six recognized floral kingdoms of the world. The plant is indigenous to the Cedarberg region and is the only place in the world where the plant grows naturally. The plants' name comes from the fine, needle-like leaves that turn red when they are fermented. Rooibos is not a true tea, but an herb.

Rooibos is a good source of antioxidants and is the only known source of a potent antioxidant called aspalathin while also containing others like nothofagin, vitexin, isovitex, orientin, isooreintin, luteolin and quercetin. Rooibos tea is rich in several minerals including iron, calcium, potassium, magnesium, zinc and sodium, as well as trace elements like copper, manganese and fluoride. Pure and natural it contains no additives or preservatives. It is a naturally calming substance and help to maintain healthy skin, teeth and bones.

Sutherlandia Frutescens is one of five currently recognized Sutherlandia species, all of which are confined to Southern Africa. Three of the species, Sutherlandia Frutescens, S. microphylla and S. tomentosa have overlapping distributions in the Western Cape Province and are probably used interchangeably in this area as kankerbos.

Sutherlandia frutescens is an important adoptogen that contains a number of highly active compounds, including canavanine, pinitol and GABA (an inhibitory neurotransmitter). Canavanine is thought to have anti-tumour and antiviral properties, it is a potent L-arginine antagonist. In addition, canavanine is an inhibitor of nitric oxide synthethase and may have use in heart failure. Pinitol is thought to have an ant diabetic effect and may have a use in treating wasting in HIV Aids and cancer. GABA is thought to play a role in stress and anxiety relief.
